Both in the EU and the US efforts are made to provide coverage for these so called ‘high’ or ‘exceptional medical risks’ through public and private (social) insurance schemes. The problems regarding the insurance of these forms of care are well known and seem to be similar throughout the western world. But the way the insurance schemes and financial arrangements that provided coverage evolved, differed in each country. This development depended on the existing system of (social) health insurance, the level of health care provision and the outcome of social and political debates. The current debate on the insurance of high medical risks would therefore benefit from a broader international, historical and political comparative perspective.

To discuss the question how the insurance of high medical risks evolved and interconnected with the development of social security and health care in both the EU and the US, the Centre for the History of Health Insurance (VU university medical center, Amsterdam) and the Department of Health, Ethics and Society of Maastricht University will organize the symposium Insuring against high medical risks from an international historical and social political perspective.

On 26 and 27 October 2012 various specialists will present papers on the development of the insurance of high medical risks in past and present in the EU and the US.

Speakers:

Dr. S.
