Toby Bennett is Research Fellow at the Centre of Culture and Creative Industries at City, University of London. Following a career in the music business, his research has concerned issues of work, organisation and policy in relation to cultural production and the creative economy. His book on back-office work and digital transition inside major record labels is forthcoming with Bloomsbury. Subsequent research has explored the embeddedness of urban development strategies in relation to local social and musical histories and global cultural production networks – the latter particularly in relation to scientific publishing and policy data (EU Horizon 2020). An emerging strand of interest concerns the social life of cultural analysis in the 1990s – in light of which he wants to know, exactly what was cultural economy?
